Another day ends, and we look forward to tomorrow
programmes sensitise and train mainstream
schoolteachers, provide scholarships for
students with disabilities for higher education,
and train a cadre of special educators for the
state and region. We also create awareness
among rights holders and duty bearers on
rights and provide legal counsel and litigation
support to redress grievances. Research
studies help to create empirical evidence to
influence policy,’ explains Ketaki Bardalai,
Executive Director, Shishu Sarothi.
Affiliations with other institutions in the
field brought in technical know-how, and
integration with government initiatives has
furthered Shishu Sarothi’s impact. It was
encouraged by government, both central and
state, to provide Early Intervention at their
institutions; conduct state-wide awareness
programmes on the Rights of Persons with
Disabilities Act; and endorsed by Samagra
Shiksha Assam to train and provide resource
support on Inclusive Education in the state. It
is now slated to become a Composite Regional
Centre for the NE region on Disability
Studies and Action with support from the
North Eastern Council and the Department
of Social Justice & Empowerment of
Government of Assam.
Empowering communities and parents of the
children, ensuring inclusion and participation in
the programmes, Shishu Sarothi has established
itself has a force in the field. e staff of Shishu
Sarothi include persons with disabilities,
some of whom are alumni of this remarkable
institution, keen to demonstrate their abilities
and participate in the organization’s work.
