nature have had a symbiotic and harmonious
relationship. However, increased populations
and over-use of natural resources has strained
the shared ecosystems between humans,
animals and forests, leading to imbalances
and conflict. e Corbett Foundation was
founded to find solutions to this conflict.
Several success stories later, this committed
organization has ensured a synergy between
wildlife/bio-diversity conservation, and local
community welfare.
‘e Corbett Foundation has formulated a
three-pronged approach – mitigating human-
wildlife conflict, health for people and livestock,
and conservation education among the
young generation,’ says Kedar Gore, Director,
TCF. It started a Rural Medical Outreach
Programme for primary health in remote
forest fringe villages and gained the trust of
local communities. is was followed up with
awareness programmes. TCF’s Interim Relief
Scheme (IRS) providing immediate ex-gratia
compensation for livestock killed by predators
resonated with the community. ‘Since 1997,
there has been no report of carcass poisoning
in the areas where IRS is being implemented.
is success spurred TCF to spread its coverage
to many more villages across the Corbett

The Corbett Foundation endeavours
to enable wildlife conservation
in tandem with sustainable
development of forest-dwelling
communities. It has a strong
presence in Corbett in Uttarakhand,
in the tiger reserves of Kanha and
Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh,
and a divisional office in Kutch. Its
programmes are a multi-pronged and
integrated approach to conservation,
to help create a future where
wildlife and human beings coexist in
harmony. TCF has implemented its
programmes in over 650+ villages in
the states of Gujarat, Uttarakhand,
Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Maharashtra
and Rajasthan.
