climate change more evident than in the
mangrove laden, Ganges delta region of the
Sunderbans. Relentless cyclones, rise of the
sea level and human encroachment lead
to a disruption of the fragile eco-system
and devastation of human settlements and
livelihoods.
In this scenario, the organization MUKTI
has responded with highly successful
interventions dedicated to sustainable
development. All of its programmes occur
with the aid of professionals, experts, and
volunteers. MUKTI works from a community
centric approach, especially the championing
of women leaders through the formation of
SHGs and capacity building. Its strategy is
to have a holistic model of environmental
conservation, including mangrove plantation
to fortify embankments as a green defensive
layer, biodiversity conservation, sustainable
agriculture, and agroforestry, addressing
both the ecological and human issues. Other
initiatives strive to support local livelihoods,
provide healthcare and education, and more.
MUKTI’s work during the Covid-19
pandemic was extensive, and gained
visibility, saving hundreds of lives. It then
began working intensively in environmental

West Bengal.The organization has
made a significant impact through
programmes on health, water &
sanitation, education & enrichment,
agriculture reforms, livelihood
& enablement, environment &
resilience, rights and special
needs, awareness & empowerment,
integrated development, and disaster
recovery, on the lives of more than
10 lakh beneficiaries, which includes
approximately 1.5 lakh households,
30,000 self-help group (SHG) women,
and 4,500 children on a yearly basis.
