India generates close to 26000 tons of
plastic waste daily. In rural areas plastic
waste is rising exponentially, and is
usually burnt in the open as there are no
recycling facilities. e Project has the
goal of creating zero-waste communities,
and aims to implement segregated waste
collection and composting at village level;
aggregation of plastic waste at Taluk level
RRFs to increase recycling of plastic waste,
and reducing pollution due to improper
waste disposal. It has also been successful
in empowering women to be the agents
of social change, and extending the reach
of government schemes like the Swachh
Bharat Mission, MGNREGS etc
• Implementing segregated,
community owned waste
management systems in 143
Gram Panchayats (GPs) in
Karnataka
• 46% of households and shops
giving segregated waste to the
door-to-door collection vehicle
• 8500 kilograms of dry waste
per day collected and recycled,
instead of dumping in landfills
and burning
• 109 GPs are collecting service
fees from waste generators and
have collected
