prizes. He was a professor and Dean of Liberal

Arts at the niversity of Texas at Austin, Provost

and Executive Vice-Chancellor at the niversity

of Kansas, and President of the niversity of

Oregon. He has served on the Board of many

prestigious organizations across the world. He is

a ellow of the American Academy of Arts and

Sciences, a Life member of Council on oreign
